Government forms committee to mull new constitution

Deputy Prime Minister Yehia al-Gamal said on Wednesday that the cabinet and the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) have agreed to form a committee to devise a unified framework for creating a new constitution.

The committee is to be comprised of representatives from all political parties, movements, syndicates, and universities, as well as the 25 January Revolution Youth Coalition.

The formation of the committee is a victory for opposition parties and revolutionary forces seeking a more broadly representative body through which to steer the country towards the formation of a new constitution.

In the wake of the revolution, the SCAF put together a constitutional committe tasked with drafting an interim constitution, by which the country would be ruled until a new constitution could be drafted. The interim constitution was adopted after a public referendum.

However, the committee was widely criticized as not being broadly representative of the political forces in Egypt.
