Heatwave continues across Egypt on Sunday

A member of the Egyptian Meteorological Authority‘s (EMA) media center, Manar Ghanem, said that the country is currently experiencing a rise in temperatures of two degrees Celsius above the normal average for this time of year.

During a phone interview with TV host Amr Adib on the “al-Hekaya” (The Story) on MBC Masr on Saturday, Ghanem added that the current perceived temperature in Cairo on Sunday is 40C.

She explained that the extension of the Indian monsoon low is the main reason behind this heatwave, in addition to the continued high humidity levels further increasing the feeling of heat.

Maximum temperatures will record a slight drop on Monday, reaching 36C in Cairo, she added, with very hot weather continuing, especially in the inland governorates.

Coastal areas meanwhile will see a relative drop in temperatures due to the influence of the sea.

The expert noted that humidity levels will rise significantly during the night, increasing the feeling of heat, especially in enclosed and poorly ventilated spaces.

Ghanem warned against direct exposure to the sun during the midday hours, especially between 12 pm and three pm, stressing the importance of wearing hats and sunglasses, and keeping well-hydrated.

Sunday’s temperatures:

  • Alexandria: 31C
  • Cairo and Hurghada: 37C
  • Sharm el-Sheikh: 38C
  • Luxor and Aswan: 42C
