Libyan airliner halts Alexandria, Amman flights indefinitely

Libya’s African Airlines said Saturday it was indefinitely halting its flights to Amman and Alexandria, failing to justify the decision, Egypt’s state agency MENA quoted a company official as saying in press statements.

Company spokesperson Mazen Abdelal said aviation authorities in the country’s east had declined to receive international flights arriving from Maitiqa Airport, east of Tripoli, attributing the halt to “reasons that we do not know yet”.

Abdelal explained that African Airlines used to run three flights to Amman and one to Alexandria every week.

Libya has been divided since 2014 by two conflicting governments, one internationally-recognized that is based in the coastal eastern city of Tobruk and the Islamist-backed, Tripoli-based General National Congress.
