People must respect the law on public protests, which requires people to obtain permission prior to staging any demonstration, said Mamdouh Shahin, legal advisor of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF).
Mamdouh made the remarks at the second session of the National Accord Conference on Thursday, where he had been delivering a speech. As his speech came to a close, he was questioned by members of the audience over the ongoing arrests of activists by the military.
Since taking control of Egypt’s government following Mubarak’s ouster on 11 February, the military has arrested thousands of protesters. On Thursday, it arrested four activists for putting up fliers advertising protests planned for this Friday. The arrests occurred in downtown Cairo.
Speaking at the same conference, Assistant Defense Minister Mamdouh Ismail said he rejected the attempts of various political groups to woo the armed forces by praising their role.
