Minister of Religious Endowments: A ruler can modernize religion

At a meeting discussing the modernization of religious discourse on Sunday, Minister of Religious Endowments Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa quoted the prophet as saying that God sends a scholar or a ruler every 100 years to modernize religion.

He said religious discourse can be modernized while keeping the basic constants and taking into account time and place, hoping that Egypt would modernize religion for the whole Islamic nation in collaboration with scholars and intellectuals of the Arab country.

He called for international cooperation to combat the terrorism that is sweeping the world. “Terrorist acts should be looked upon as individual acts and should not be used to attack Muslim countries as a whole,” he said. “This brings instability like in Iraq and Libya.”

He also condemned the terrorist attack on the French Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris that killed 12 people.
