Minister urges objective coverage of Alex church attack

Egypt's Minister of Information Anas al-Fiqqi urged satellite and privately-owned television channels to heed objectivity and avoid inflammatory coverage while reporting on the New Year's Eve church attack in Alexandria that killed 21 and injured tens of others.

The minister in a statement demanded that nationalist dimensions be focused upon while reporting on the attack, and urged channels to refrain from arguments that incite the public.

Al-Fiqqi said the tragic bombing highlighted Egypt's need for unity in the face of sedition "more than any time before," adding that media outlets have the ability to help in that respect.

Security authorities believe the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber.

President Hosni Mubarak, in a statement addressing Egyptians on Saturday, accused “foreign hands” of carrying out the attack and called for national unity to confront terrorism.

The attack sparked Copts to demonstrate throughout Egypt, resulting in clashes with security forces.
