Egypt's transitional period is nearing its end and the country will soon see a transfer of power to an elected president, presidential hopeful and former Arab League Amr Moussa said Monday.
According to the transition road map declared by the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, Egypt should have an elected president by June.
In an interview with Jordanian newspaper Arabs Today, Moussa said the new elected government will lead Egypt's reconstruction and seek stability, democracy and social justice, fight corruption and restore Egypt's regional and international standing.
Moussa said he has decided to make his presidential bid given the crucial stage Egypt is going through, during which all Egyptians should offer to serve their country.
Moussa stressed that Egyptian-US relations should be based on mutual interests, adding that those relations should take into account Arab interests and stability in the Arab region.
Commenting on the expanding political presence by Egyptian Islamist forces, Moussa said those forces have to be recognized as part of the national political spectrum and urged Egyptians to accept the rules of democratic process.
Moussa stressed that Egypt’s peace with Israel is contingent on the latter’s commitment to the previously established peace treaty obligations, adding that the issue is also tied to Egypt’s support for the rights of Palestinians.
