Mubarak released in Ahram gifts case

Ousted President Hosni Mubarak was released on Wednesday by Cairo Criminal Court pending the Ahram gifts case. Sources say he is not currently detained pending any other case.

Since his ouster after a popular revolution in 2011, Mubarak has been released from three other cases in which he has been tried.

In this case, Mubarak faced charges of illegally receiving expensive gifts from al-Ahram institution, the biggest state-run press institution in the country.

On Tuesday morning, Mubarak’s lawyer, Farid al-Deeb, submitted a request to the Public Funds prosecution for the release of his client, since he had been released pending cases of killing demonstrators, graft, and illegal acquiring presidential palaces.

The Ahram gifts case was the last case in which Mubarak was detained. He has already paid back the amount of the gifts he had received, and the prosecution has released all the other defendants in the case.

A source at the prosecutor general's office said if a decision was made to release Mubarak, it would be implemented. The prosecution would, however, request the continuation of his detention.
