NDP conference will not choose presidential nominee, says minister

The National Democratic Party’s nominee for the September 2011 presidential election will not be selected during its current annual conference, an Egyptian minister said Saturday.

Instead, the announcement of the ruling party’s nominee will be made at a special conference, to be preceded by meetings dealing with that particular issue, said Minister for Legal Affairs Moufeed Shehab.

Observers believe President Hosni Mubarak, 82, intends to run for a sixth presidential term in the upcoming presidential election. He has not announced publicly that he will run, but certain party leaders have said that Mubarak is their nominee for the presidential poll.
