NDP stalwarts win parliamentary nominations uncontested

The ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) of President Hosni Mubarak on Saturday ended the deadline for candidacy applications for upcoming parliamentary elections slated for November.

Party leaders won the nominations uncontested, with junior party members declining to challenge them.

NDP leaders to win nominations were: Fathi Sorour for Cairo’s Sayeda Zeinab district; Kamal al-Shazli for Bagour, Menoufiya; Zakaria Azmi for Zeitoun, Cairo; Mufid Shehab for Moharam Bek, Alexandria; Mahmoud Mohi Eddin for Kafr Shokr, Qalyubiya; Sayed Meshaal for Helwan; Ali al-Meselhi for Abu Kebir, Sharqiya; Amin Abaza for Tellin, Sharqiya; Mohamed Nasr Eddin Allam for Juhayna, Sohag; Youssef Boutros-Ghali for Maahad Fanni, Cairo; and Ahmed Ezz for Menouf, Menoufiya.

This brings the number of government ministers to apply for parliamentary nominations to eight, of which seven won.

Education Minister Ahmed Badr, however, conceded his nomination for the district of Shebin Al-Kom to his brother, while Petroleum Minister Alaa Fahmi did not apply for candidacy.
