Nour and FJP agree on mixed parliamentary and presidential system

Shura Council Undersecretary Tarek al-Sahry, who is also a representative of the Salafi-led Nour Party in the constituent assembly, has said the party would call for a mixed parliamentary and presidential system in the new constitution, as it deems it most suitable for Egypt at this stage.

“The Freedom and Justice Party agrees with us,” he told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

He added that his party would call for the constitution to stipulate in Article 2 that the Islamic Sharia is a main source of legislation, as opposed to the “principles” of the Sharia being the source, which the FJP wants to include in the article.

Meanwhile, the FJP has amended the draft constitution that it would present to the assembly, stressing in the the first article that Egypt is a democratic system, which Article 5 would explain in detail, especially as regards the rule of law, civil rights and freedoms.

Adel Afify, president of the Salafi Asala Party, said he would urge the people to vote against the new constitution if it contained the word “principles” in Article 2.

“We insist on calling it the ‘provisions’ of the Sharia,” he said.
