Parliamentary election battles start early

Battles for the upcoming parliamentary elections have started early among various political parties.

Members of the Wafd Party executive committee differed among themselves as to whether to run in elections under the Democratic Coalition, of which it is a member, or separate from it.

“The multitude of parties within the coalition, and the high number of seats the Freedom and Justice Party is competing for, prompted us to think of running separately,” said Wafd Vice President Bahaa Abu Shaqqa.

Meanwhile, Islamist parties have started preparing for the elections. “We’re fielding 150 candidates,” said Tareq al-Zomor, spokesman of the Jama’a al-Islamiya. “And we’ll use slogans that clearly bear Islamic connotations in our campaign.”

The Salafi Al-Nour Party and the Nahda Party said they would announce their platforms soon.
