PM Hailemariam reelected in Ethiopia

The fifth Ethiopian Parliament began its five-year term on Monday with a joint session of the two chambers of Parliament – the House of Federation and the House of Peoples' Representatives.

Just before the joint session, the House of Peoples' Representatives voted to keep Hailemariam Desalegn as prime minister for a five-year term, a position he held for three years since the death of former Prime Minister Meles Zenawi.

Hailemariam was nominated by the ruling Ethiopian Peoples’ Democratic Front (EPRDF), which swept 401 of the 447-seat parliament in the elections held last May while its partners filled the remaining 46 seats in the House of Peoples’ Representatives.

Hailemariam will soon present his cabinet to the House for endorsement.
