Police in Sinai arrest Palestinian ‘smuggler’ carrying US$50,000

Egyptian authorities arrested a Palestinian believed to be a goods smuggler while he was en route to Cairo after allegedly entering the country through the tunnels between Sinai and Gaza, a security official told MENA on Friday.

The state-run news agency quoted the official as saying that a 22-year-old Palestinian was arrested on Thursday at a checkpoint. He was reportedly carrying US$50,000. MENA added that the man did not have a passport.

Major General Ahmed Bakr, the director of security in North Sinai, told MENA that police believe the man is involved in smuggling goods between Egypt and Gaza.

Bakr added that the man told police that he had entered Egypt through a tunnel south of the Salah Eddin area in order to buy goods for smuggling.
