Political parties call on military to crack down on Salafis

Political parties have warned of the increasing political role of the Salafis and other Islamic groups that they call “extremist” and “threatening” to social peace, warning that they could drown Egypt in "a sea of blood."

Wafd Party Honorary President Mostafa al-Tawil called on the Supreme Council of Armed Forces to apply martial law in combatting the criminal activities of such groups.

“Each group thinks it has the sole right to talk on behalf of Islam,” said Nasserist Party Vice-President Mohamed Abul Ela. “They display their might in order to impose their views on others.”

For his part, Wasat Party Vice President Essam Sultan called for dialogue with Salafis and other extremist groups.
