Pope Tawadros: Modernity does not mean abandoning religion

Egypt’s Copts leader Pope Tawadros II has said modernity does not mean abandoning religious fundamentals. He indicated basic human values should be followed, which include the virtues of tolerance, mercy and love of life.

“When we survive modernity, it does not mean that we abandon the essence of our religion. Easterners are naturally religious. They do not accept challenging or offending their religious fundamentals in any form,” the pope said during the 24th International Islamic Conference, organized by the Religious Endowments and Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs Ministry.

“We, clerics, have a huge responsibility. When man grows up, he gets ruled by five sources; family, school, church or mosque, friends and media. Such systems include the sources of societal upbringing,” Pope Tawadros added.
