Popular Current: Muslim Brotherhood is dragging country to violence

The Popular Current has accused the Muslim Brotherhood of attempting to drag Egypt into “a wave of violence and chaos” as violence surges between Brotherhood loyalists supporting deposed president Mohamed Morsy and their opponents.

The Health Ministry said nine were killed Monday in encounters between demonstrators demanding the reinstatement of the toppled president and citizens in Cairo, Giza, and Qalyubiya.

The party, which is part of the National Salvation Front, the leading opposition coalition against Morsy’s regime, urged authorities to legally handle the proponents and instigators of violence. In a statement on Tuesday, the party, led by former presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabbahi, demanded an investigation into recurrent clashes and asked that those responsible be held accountable.

In a statement, the party said that “The Popular Current renews its call for all parties to commit to peace,” adding that the party distinguishes between “those who practise freedom of opinion, no matter how much others may disagree, and those who instigate and practise violence."
