Presenter demands govt action on watchdog’s LE600 bn corruption statements

A TV presenter has demanded the government comment on statements by Egypt’s chief auditor, which put funds squandered due to government corruption at LE600 billion.

AlKahera wal Nas’s talk show host Ossama Kamal urged Prime Minister Sherif Ismail to explain why he has not taken any action concerning the squandering of funds disclosed by Hisham Geneina, head of the Central Auditing Organization.

In press statements on Wednesday, Geneina said that while it was difficult to calculate the financial loss from corruption within government institutions, the amount could have well surpassed LE600 billion in 2015. He said CAO officers make sure to submit annual reports to concerned authorities, including the presidency.

Private newspaper Youm7 quoted Geneina as saying that a “delay in security clearances” has prevented his agency’s employees from carrying out their reports concerning the financial performance of the president's office.
