Prosecutor renews detention of 237 suspects over Kerdasa violence

Head of North Giza Prosecution Ahmed al-Baqly renewed the detention of 237 suspects 15 days pending investigation. The defendants were arrested over the killing of 11 policemen in Kerdasa in 2013.

Arrest warrants were issued against fifty others including former MP Abdel Salam Bashandy and Jamaa al-Islamiya leader Tareq al-Zomor over charges of inciting violence.

The defendants were accused of premeditated murder, joining an armed group aiming to disturb public peace and security, sieging and storming of a government facility, resisting and assaulting security forces, and possessing heavy weapons and bullets without permission.

Kerdasa was a stronghold for Islamists that the security forces raided in September 2013 in search for suspects behind earlier assaults on police.
