Dozens of protesters blocked the corniche road on Saturday evening in the Bulaq Abul Ela area following clashes with police as the latter attempted to close stores around Wekalet al-Balah.
Residents tried to prevent the security troops from removing the stores that were encroaching onto the streets. One of the detectives slapped an elderly man while his sons were present, triggering the clashes and leading to the residents blocking the corniche.
Protesters shouted slogans against policemen as well as the Interior Ministry.
Policemen and some residents have been trying to convince the protesters to open the road since then.
