Protests outside Journalists Syndicate, 25 arrested in Alexandria

Dozens of protesters gathered outside the Journalists Syndicate on Friday to express their objections to the handing over of the islands of Tiran and Sanafir to Saudi control, part of the recent agreement on maritime borders between Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

The protesters chanted: "Oh time, be a witness that Sisi has sold it to Salman," "They sold the land to Saudi Arabia," "Leave," and "Down with military rule".

Security forces were stationed across the street during the protest and prevented newcomers from joining the protest, closing off the streets leading to the syndicate.

Anti-riot police and police vehicles were deployed in Talaat Harb Square to stop protesters reaching Tahrir Square in downtown Cairo, while more police were deployed at the Judges Club headquarters.

Meanwhile, a security source in Alexandria said 25 protesters were arrested in the city on Friday. Those arrested will be released after their identities have been confirmed and they have been interviewed by police, according to the source.

The security forces dispersed protests in the areas of Montazah, Second Raml, Mina al-Basal, and Bab Sharqy, chasing protesters down side streets.

Security forces reportedly made at least 12 arrests earlier in Cairo on Friday, dispersing several groups of people apparently seeking to protest against the transfer of the islands to Saudi Arabia.
