Scientist: Kifarah well part of giant groundwater passage

Eman Ghoneim, director of the North Carolina University Space Research Center, said the Kifarah well in the Western Desert is part of a giant groundwater reservoir beneath the great sand sea.

“It took more than ten years of radar and satellite search to discover it,” she said.

“A river used to flow in that place thousands of years ago,” she said. “The reservoir was created when it dried.”

Ghoneim explained that this was an area of tropical forests 150,000 years ago. “The water of the reservoir is therefore very clear, as if it was a natural refrigerator,” she said.
