Nine workers were killed and three farmers injured following a botched rescue attempt in Qalyubiya Governorate, just north of Cairo, Wednesday.
According to investigators, a sanitation worker fell 20 meters into a sewage reservoir during maintenance in the Tukh district.
His colleagues rushed to help him, with eight dying in the attempt.
Zakariya Abdel Rabbu, the head of Qalyubiya's health department, said the workers drowned.
He added that farmers nearby saw the incident and also attempted to rescue the workers and were injured as a result.
Qalyubiya Governor Adel Zayed announced he would give LE5,000 to victims' families and investigate the incident.
