Sisi to open mosque, cathedral in new capital

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is scheduled to open the al-Fattah al-Alem Mosque and the Birth of Christ Cathedral on January 7 in the New Administrative Capital, Chief of the Armed Forces’ Engineering Authority Kamel al-Waziri stated on Thursday.

Waziri added that Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and several presidents of foreign countries would attend the opening ceremony.

The al-Fattah al-Alem Mosque was built on an area of 59 acres (122 thousand square meters) and constructed by the Arab Contractors Company close to the new ring road.  The mosque is set to become the country’s main mosque.

Meanwhile, the Birth of Christ Cathedral was constructed through contributions from both Muslims and Coptic Christians. It will be the largest cathedral in the Middle East. The cathedral was also the largest project to be built in the New Administrative Capital.
