Smugglers shot an Egyptian policeman dead on Thursday at the border between Egypt and Israel.
Security sources said Tareq Ramadan, 22, of central forces, was killed south of the Rafah border crossing and Karam Salem exit.
Ramadan was attacked by a group of masked smugglers with sacks of drugs attempting to infiltrate into Israel, sources said. When he tried to prevent them from approaching the border, they started shooting.
His body was transferred to Rafah Central Hospital. The smugglers escaped on foot and investigations in surrounding areas are ongoing.
According to Israeli sources, some 20,000 African migrants have entered the state via Sinai since 2007.
