Statistics agency: Egyptian exports of cotton declines by 38.3%

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics announced that Egypt's cotton exports declined during the fourth quarter of the 2012/2013 agricultural season by 38.3 percent, to reach 91.6 thousand metric quintal compared to 5.149 thousand metric quintal during the same period of the previous season.

The agency said in a statement on cotton production between June to August last that the amount of ginned cotton between June to August 2013 recorded 2.19 thousand metric quintal compared to 318.9 A metric tons during the same period of the previous season, dropping by 94 percent.
 
The agency attributed the decline to decreasing the cultivated area of cotton to reach 333 thousand acres in the agricultural season 2011/2012, compared to 520 thousand acres in the agricultural season 2010/2011, dropping thus by 9.35 percent.
 
The total amount of domestic consumed cotton reached 5.138 thousand metric quintal during the period from June to August, compared to 326.5 thousand metric quintal in the same period of the previous season, marking a decline by 6.57 percent.
 
The total amount of imported cotton, consumed domestically, between June to August reached 6.141 thousand metric quintal compared to 7.5 thousand metric quintal in the same period of the previous season, with an increase of 8.1788 percent.
 
The growing use of imported cotton came to cover shortage in grinned Egyptian cotton, the statement added.
