Student sets classroom on fire over dispute with security guard

A student in Ismailia set his preparatory school on fire Thursday over a dispute with a school security guard.

Security sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the school headmaster reported the fire in one of the classrooms, accusing a 14-year-old student of using gasoline to help ignite it in a personal vendetta against one of the guards that works there. The headmaster said the other students were out of the classroom at the time.

Firefighters were able to put out the fire and police notified the public prosecutor to begin an investigation.

Atta Mahmoud, 55, the school guard, blamed the same student for the fire, citing what he said were previous conflicts between them. Security sources said the student confessed to lighting the fire in hopes that the guard would be accused of the crime.

The official sources did not specify the nature of the conflict between the two.
