Syndicate demands church apology over assault on journalists

The Journalists Syndicate on Wednesday condemned the staff of the Virgin Mary Church in Zeitoun for assaulting journalists responsible for covering Coptic issues, on Tuesday, saying this has occurred several times before.

The syndicate said it would help the journalists file legal proceedings against the church.

The journalists association responsible for covering Coptic issues said in a statement Wednesday that it is holding a vigil outside the syndicate on Sunday noon to condemn the assault on the journalists while they were covering the visit of Pope Tawadros II on Tuesday to commemorate the apparition of the Virgin Mary.

The privately-owned daily Youm7 on Tuesday quoted those that assaulted the journalists as saying they had instructions not to let journalists in.
