Tourism down 60 percent in March, says government report

The number of tourists visiting Egypt last March fell by 60 percent, according to a government report released Thursday. 

Only 535,000 tourists visited Egypt in March, compared with 1.3 million during the same month last year, said the report, which was issued by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics.

The tourism sector was among the economic sectors most affected by recent events. Losses amounted to US$648 million (LE3.8 billion), the report said. 

It said the number of tourists coming from Eastern Europe declined during this period by 86.2 percent, while those coming from Western Europe decreased by 54.4 percent.
