Wafd Party accuses US of interfering in Egypt’s affairs

Liberal Wafd Party Chairman al-Sayed al-Badawy accused the US Embassy in Cairo on Tuesday of interfering in Egypt’s internal affairs.

Badawy said the US Embassy is funding and supporting certain entities and figures – which he did not identify by name – in order to create confusion and chaos in Egyptian society.

Badawy’s accusations came during a press statement following his meeting with Bernardino Leon, the EU Special Representative for the Southern Mediterranean Region.

Badawy said Egyptians consider Americans to be great people, "but we have a problem with US government institutions as they try to interfere in our internal affairs, something we are especially sensitive to."

Badawy went on to say that the Egyptian people reject American interference, and that it strongly rejects the appointment of a special US envoy for minority affairs in the Middle East and Egypt.

"This is also rejected by Copts, even more than Muslims, because Copts are not a minority; we are one people and have been for thousands of years," he said.

The US House of Representatives voted in late July for the creation of a special envoy for minority affairs in the Middle East. However, the move has yet to be voted on in the Senate, and no likely candidates for the role have been announced.
