Civilian killed by unknown gunmen in North Sinai

A 50-year-old man was shot on Thursday by unknown assailants, south of the city of Arish in North Sinai, security sources said.

The reasons behind the shooting and the identity of the attackers are yet to be known, but the SInai Peninsula has been highly restive due to recurrent bloody attacks against the army and police forces since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

Extremist islamist groups have claimed responsibility for most of the attacks.

Egyptian army and police forces have engaged in a campaign targeting the extremist groups in the peninsula, occasionally announcing the killing of suspected terrorists, whose identity remains mostly unknown.
