Automotive information center: Vehicle sales up 2% from last year

The Automotive Marketing Information Center (AMIC) said vehicle sales in the first seven months of 2013 reached 112,000 cars, up 2 percent from the same period last year .

Khaled Hosny, the spokesperson for AMIC, said private car sales amounted to 76,900 cars or 69 percent of the total sales. Truck sales totaled 22,000 or 20 percent of the sales, and buses totaled 13,000 or 11 percent of the sales.

Hassan Sulaiman, head of car traders in the Federation of Egyptian Commerce Chambers, projected that car sales would rise by 20 percent next year. He said, however, that this increase is going to be tied to the achievement of political and economic stability.

He added that the car sector would not progress until the constitution has been drafted, the parliamentary and presidential elections conducted, and a new cabinet formed.

Car sales plummeted by 42 percent in July 2013 compared to the same period last year due to political turmoil, according to AMIC's statistics.
