Constitution committee moves to forbid media censorship: spokesperson

Egypt's 50-person constitutional amendment committee has adopted an article prohibiting media censorship, according to committee spokesperson Mohamed Salmawy.

The new article would forbid censorship or the closure of newspapers and television channels, except in cases of war or national security threats.

The article also prohibits the disabling of means of communication.

“State media is ensured to express all opinions and interests,” Salmawy said. “It shall no longer voice the ruling party or the government.”

Media has been repeatedly attacked in Egypt following the country's 2011 revolution.

Several channels were closed down immediately after the 3 July overthrow of Mohamed Morsy.
