Poet Farouq Guweida withdrew on Thursday from the Constituent Assembly due to the extensive disagreements between its members, which he called “the biggest sin against the revolution and the rights of the martyrs.”
Guweida wrote a resignation letter to the Constituent Assembly head Hossam al-Gheriany condemning the discord, saying that reaching a consensus in these conditions was very hard if not impossible.
He condemned the use of religion to acquire political gains, and called certain assembly members’ attempts to impose censorship on thought a “tyranny.”
Guweida's withdrawal from the assembly comes at the end of a week of a number of withdrawals including of the major Christian churches and the Journalists Syndicate.
