Popular Muslim television preacher Amr Khaled has launched an initiative dubbed "Internet Free of Sectarian Strife" to provide Muslim and Christian bloggers in Egypt with a forum from which to denounce sectarian animosity.

“We must come up with an initiative to preserve our national unity in the wake of the Alexandria church bombing,” Khaled said. “I believe the Internet served as a source of sectarian incitement, hence the name of the initiative.”

“I want to cleanse the Internet of such incitement and use it instead as a means of promoting peaceful coexistence,” he added.

Khaled plans to officially launch the initiative in coming weeks in hopes of targeting two million Egyptian facebook users. “I began with myself,” he said.

According to Khaled, some 100,000 bloggers have already joined the initiative.

“If the program succeeds, I'll compose a list of the expressions and terms frequently used to incite sectarian strife, which I will post on the Internet,” he said.
