Prominent FJP figure calls Shater presidential nomination a ‘trap’

A prominent moderate Muslim Brotherhood figure said Monday that he voted against the group’s decision to nominate its deputy supreme guide, Khairat al-Shater, for president. He said the Brotherhood cannot take responsibility for all political positions in Egypt.

“It is a form of oppression for the country and for the Brotherhood to assume the responsibility for the entire nation on its own at this critical time,” MP Mohamed al-Beltagy, a member of the Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party, said.

On his Facebook page, Beltagy said he believes the Brotherhood has fallen into a trap by fielding a presidential candidate, as prominent Islamist thinker Fahmy Howeidy said in an article published in Al-Shorouk on Monday.

Howeidy said the Brotherhood’s adversaries want the group to take over power, get steeped in the country’s problems and eventually fail.

Beltagy said he respects the opinion of the majority who approved Shater’s nomination, adding that he trusts their good intentions.

But he said he is concerned about the future of the nation and the Islamic project, which he said generations after generations have awaited.
