Prosecutors investigate financial irregularities in 2006 African Nations Cup

Prosecutors are investigating financial irregularities at the time of the 2006 African Nations Cup hosted in Egypt, according to the Central Auditing Authority.

The authority report found irregularities in ticket sales, advertising and the accommodation of the visiting teams.

Egyptian Football Association Chairman Samir Zaher, whose board oversaw the championship, resigned last May, following the deaths of 74 people in violence at a Port Said match between rival Ahly and Masry clubs.

Egypt organized the African Nations Cup in 1980, 1985, 1986 and 2006, and won the cup most recently in 2010.
