Students at the Nile Academy in Mansoura were surprised when a Salafi preacher interrupted their prom Tuesday to preach against music.

Preacher Hazem Shuman ascended to the stage in the middle of the event before well-known singer Hisham Abbas could start his performance and told the students that Islam prohibits songs and singing, according to the academy's vice manager, Reda Abdel Ghaffar.

Angry students booed Shuman, who is a presenter on several religious satellite channels, and another man accompanying him.

Abdel Ghaffar said he told Shuman the students had chosen the performers and that no religious violations had been committed, to which Shuman responded that religious duty required organizers to end the party.

Abdel Ghaffar said Shuman told him he had stopped a similar party at the faculty of pharmacy.

The confrontation ended when students declined to communicate with the men and drove them out, Abdel Ghaffar said.
