Eight suspected militants and two police officers were killed Thursday morning when police attempted to apprehend them in Assiut Governorate, according to a security source.

Central Security officers Bassem Adel and Ahmed Saeed died during the confrontation in the Arab al-Kallabat area and the same source said another officer and a solider were also injured.

State-owned Al-Ahram newspaper quoted Major General Abul Qasim Abu Daif, head of Assiut Security Directorate, as saying that the mission was planned to apprehend suspected criminals as well as fugitives, who opened fire on security forces when they entered the village.

Police arrested 10 other suspects and confiscated nine machine guns, according to an Interior Ministry statement.
