A woman died at the entrance of a private hospital in Alexandria after the hospital refused to admit her before paying a huge down payment that she could not afford, despite her poor condition.
Shaaban Morsi Saleh, 53, saw Sabah Mohamed Gad, 42, standing exhausted at the entrance of the Mabaret al-Asafra Hospital in Amreyya district that denied her entry.
“I begged them to help her but they refused, and then suddenly she fell, dead,” said Saleh, according to the website of the state-operated daily Al-Ahram.
Examinations revealed the woman ate fish and had food poisoning.
The law prohibits the hospitals from denying patients in critical situations, but many say that such laws are not enforced.
