Party chief: Security services urged postponing elections, canceling parties

Social Democratic Egyptian Party Chief Mohamed Abul Ghar said reports submitted by security services to President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi over political parties and coming parliamentary elections are contradictory.

Some reports support holding the elections, while others recommend canceling them, he said, adding that some reports urged the suspension of parties, while still others stressed the importance of their existence in the political arena.

During a party meeting in Beni Suef on Friday, Abul Ghar said the parliamentary elections will take place by the end of the year and there will be major changes in the electoral lists and alliances.

He indicated a refusal to meet a delegation from the April 6 movement, as it was banned by the courts. “As a party chief, I meet only with legal entities,” he said.
