Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber announced a suspension on new licenses for restaurants and cafes in Heliopolis, Maadi, Zamalek, and Garden City.
This decision was made in accordance with Public Shop Law No. 154 of 2019, limiting such activities to currently existing licensed establishments.
The Governor emphasized that this measure was taken in response to numerous complaints from residents, civil society organizations, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) dedicated to preserving the unique heritage and architectural identity of these historic districts.
Concerns were raised regarding the noise and disruption caused by the unregulated expansion of these businesses, as well as the unauthorized conversion of residential properties into commercial and administrative units, which compromises the privacy and character of these distinguished areas.
