The Egyptian national team continued its historic run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, securing a spot in the Round of 16 after defeating Australia on penalties following a thrilling Round of 32 clash last night.
The high-octane encounter saw a stellar performance from the Pharaohs, who successfully neutralized the Socceroos despite Australia’s distinct physical and height advantages. Egypt took an early lead in the 13th minute courtesy of a brilliant strike from Emam Ashour.
However, Australia found an equalizer ten minutes into the second half through an unlucky own goal, as a defensive clearance deflected off Mohamed Hany’s head and into his own net.
Despite relentless attempts from both sides to snatch a winner during the remainder of regulation and extra time, the deadlock could not be broken, sending the match to a penalty shootout.
During the shootout, Egypt’s quartet of Mahmoud Saber, Ramy Rabia, Mohamed Salah, and Hossam Abdelmaguid all clinicaly converted their spot-kicks. For Australia, Jackson Irvine and Awer Mabil scored, while Harry Souttar and Kye Rowles failed to convert, sealing the victory for Egypt.
Tactically, Egypt’s head coach Hossam Hassan outmaneuvered his Australian counterpart, Tony Popovic. Hassan’s second-half substitutions proved decisive, turning the tide and granting the Pharaohs the tactical edge to close out the historic victory.
