Brotherhood students protest before Cairo University main gate, block Nahda Street

Cairo University students affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood moved their protests from campus to the area in front of the main gate, blocking Nahda street.

Students flashed the Rabaa al-Adaweya salute and photos of deposed President Mohamed Morsy and chanted different slogans like ‘down, down with military rule,’ while security troops practiced self-restraint.

Troops tightened security around Nahda Square, fearing riots by the students.

Verbal wrangles erupted between passers-by supporting Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and students shouting anti-military slogans. Central security personnel intervened to separate them.

Students from Cairo University have escalated protests since the mass arrests and killing of their colleage Mohamed Reda on 28 Novemer during violent clashes that ensued after security forces stormed the campus. Government officials later claimed that autopsy investigations revealed Reda was killed by his fellow students as the bullets in his body did not match those used by security forces.
