Court holds state responsible for stray dog attack

Setting a legal precedent, the Beheira Department of the Alexandria Administrative Court has ordered the government to pay LE50,000 in damages to the family of a man who died from being bitten by a stray dog.

The family had brought a case against the governor of Beheira, the interior minister and the heads of the province’s agriculture and veterinary departments demanding compensation for the victim's death.

Elaborating on the verdict, the court said the state is responsible for managing stray dogs to keep citizens safe, and is therefore to blame for any injuries or deaths resulting from attacks by stray animals.
