Egypt receives orders from nobody on NGOs: minister

Social Solidarity Minister Ghada Wali said on Saturday that the ministry shoulders the responsibility of monitoring non-governmental organizations and receives no orders from foreign entities to do this job.

During an interview with Sada el Balad TV channel, the minister said that about 1,100 NGOs are outlawed in Egypt while 571 others have been dissolved.

The ministry is the only body that gives permission for foreign funding directed to societies in Egypt, she said.

Scores of organizations have achieved success under the current law issued in 2002, she said, asserting that a new draft will be considered by the in-waiting parliament.
