Egypt responds to Qatari claims in UNESCO row

Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Ahmed Abo Zaid, denied reports that an Egyptian diplomat chanted anti-Qatar sentiments after the results for the UNESCO elections was announced.

“The Qatari al-Jazeera channel still creates misinformation and spread lies,” Abo Zaid said in a twitter statement.

Qatar’s Al-Jazeera TV broadcasted a video alleged to show an Egyptian diplomat shout, “Down with Qatar,” following the results of the election for the new Director-General of the United Nations UNESCO on Friday, at the organization’s headquarters in Paris

“The video broadcast by Al-Jazeera is not of an Egyptian diplomat or any member of the Egypt UNESCO mission,” Abu Zaid said through his Twitter account on Saturday morning.

Egypt’s candidate for the post of Director-General of UNESCO, Moushira Khattab, lost the runoff vote to her French rival, on Friday Audrey Azoulay.

In the last round, Azoulay won against Qatari candidate Hamad bin Abd elaziz al-Kawari.
