Egypt sends medical convoys to Somalia

The humanitarian relief commitee at Egypt's Doctors Syndicate has decided to send three medical convoys to famine-hit Somalia within days.

The committee's chief executive, Mostafa Zoghby, said the convoys will be dispatched in coordination with the Mogadishu-based Zamzam Foundation.

The convoys will contain US$30,000 worth of medical supplies.

Zoghby said his committee is also coordinating with Islamic Relief in Somalia to provide medical needs, adding that a delegation of doctors had been sent to Somalia to check the situation on the ground.

A syndicate statement said its Facebook campaign generated LE300,000 in donations to help Somalis.

On 20 July, the United Nations declared an official famine in two regions of southern Somalia. Nearly 10 million people are said to have been affected by the disaster.
