Committee to count Egyptian expat votes Monday

The general committee supervising voting for Egyptians abroad in the presidential election is scheduled to meet Monday at the Foreign Ministry to count the ballots cast last week.

Voting ended Thursday for the estimated 586,000 Egyptian voters living in 166 countries. Local polls will open Wednesday and Thursday for the first round of voting in the election, Egypt’s first after last year’s uprising ousted President Hosni Mubarak.

The Presidential Elections Commission said in a statement that it called on all candidates or their representatives to attend the vote-counting process.

Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Morsy has led the vote counting so far for Egyptians in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Early results show former Brotherhood member Abdel Moneim Abouel Fotouh and ex-Civil Aviation Minister Ahmed Shafiq leading in different US constituencies.
