Egyptian secretary general favoured by Arab League members

Arab League member states agree that the body's next secretary general should be an Egyptian national, according to high-level Arab diplomatic sources.

They added that Arab leaders say the new candidate, who would succeed Amr Moussa on 15 May, should not hail from the old regime that was toppled by the 25 January revolution.

The sources also said that even Qatar and Algeria prefer an Egyptian secretary general, although they had previously demanded the post be rotated among member states.

Meanwhile, an Egyptian diplomatic source said the Supreme Council of Armed Forces has not yet chosen a candidate for the post.
